Germany Embassy Attestation
Germany is a member of the Hague Convention, but it objected to India's accession, so an Indian apostille is not valid in Germany. Indian documents are instead legalised or verified through the German Embassy or Consulates in India.

Check what the German authority asks for
German offices, universities and registry offices (Standesamt) set their own requirements: legalisation, document verification or a certified translation.
- 2
State / MEA stages (if required)
Some routes need state authentication and MEA attestation before the German mission's stage.
- 3
German Embassy / Consulate stage
The German mission in India legalises or verifies the document, often through its own verification procedure.
- 4
Certified German translation
A translation by a sworn translator is commonly required.
Good to know
- Because of Germany's objection under Article 12 of the Convention, an MEA apostille alone is not accepted between India and Germany.
- Personal documents (birth and marriage certificates) for German registry offices are often verified by the German mission, which can take several weeks.
- Study and work applications may only need certified copies or an evaluation, so always check the receiving institution's instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an MEA apostille for Germany?
No. Germany objected to India's accession to the Apostille Convention, so the apostille does not apply between the two countries. The German Embassy/Consulate route is used instead.
